James Heckman, Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences, conducted an influential study across several countries analyzing the impact of investment in early childhood development. The findings of this research have significantly shaped public policies related to early childhood education worldwide, as they demonstrate that investing in the early years—particularly in education—leads to success not only in school, but throughout life.
In addition to Heckman’s findings, neuroscience tells us that the first five years of life are crucial for children’s development. During this period, brain architecture is formed—that is, the way the brain is organized and structured—which serves as the foundation for learning, behavior, and health. As parents, we have a single opportunity to do everything possible to ensure that this developing brain grows within a safe, nurturing environment rich in opportunities. These years do not return; childhood passes and does not repeat itself.
While genetics play an important role in shaping brain architecture, the quality of experiences and interactions children have during their early years has an even greater impact on how that architecture develops. High-quality experiences and interactions lead to optimal brain development—experiences that are rich and challenging, supported by respectful and affectionate relationships with adults who listen, attune themselves, and respond sensitively to children’s cues.
For this reason, caring for children’s development in their early years is a responsibility that must be taken seriously. One essential question every parent should ask is: What environment and educational model are best suited to support my child’s optimal development during the early years?
One of the cities included in James Heckman’s research was Reggio Emilia, Italy—a city that gives its name to an educational approach that emerged at the end of World War II and has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness over time. Heckman’s study showed that high-quality educational experiences in the early years, such as those offered through the Reggio Emilia Approach, generate significant and long-lasting benefits in human development. As a result, many countries have adopted the pillars of the Reggio Emilia Approach within their educational systems, recognizing it as an innovative educational philosophy that has positively influenced education worldwide.
Grounded in scientifically validated research—such as Heckman’s work and the contributions of neuroscience to education—Hábitat Learning Community decided, from its very inception, to base its early childhood pedagogical proposal on the Reggio Emilia Approach. We see this as an invaluable opportunity to transform the way our society perceives and understands early childhood education.
But what does the Reggio Emilia Approach specifically contribute to education?
This approach recognizes children as protagonists of their own learning, viewing them as citizens from birth—competent beings, rich in potential, capable of constructing knowledge through exploration of their environment and relationships with others.
Another essential aspect is the role of the environment, which is considered the “third teacher,” alongside the first teacher—the family—and the second—the teachers within the school context. Understanding that the environment is not merely a backdrop for learning experiences, Hábitat Learning Community takes this Reggio-inspired principle seriously by offering thoughtfully designed spaces, intentionally created to foster autonomy, exploration, and curiosity in children.
As in the schools of Reggio Emilia, at Hábitat Learning Community both children and adults find in aesthetics a way of thinking and being in the world. Aesthetics represent an ethical and sensitive stance toward learning, where beauty is understood as an expression of care, harmony, and respect for the environment and for those who inhabit it.
Another core principle of the Reggio Emilia Approach that Hábitat has fully embraced—and that distinguishes it from other educational models—is the active participation of families. Families are seen as partners in supporting the children who are part of our community. This partnership allows children to develop a strong sense of belonging and to grow within a safe environment built on a network of trust that enriches their learning. For this reason, Hábitat Learning Community is deeply committed to involving families in their children’s school life, fostering a cohesive, reflective learning community dedicated to the well-being and holistic development of both children and adults.
The Reggio Emilia Approach also includes specific pedagogical practices that bring these principles to life. Project-based learning, the teacher’s role as researcher, and pedagogical documentation as a tool to make learning visible are just some of the practices you can observe in action when visiting Hábitat Learning Community.
In a country like ours, building a more equitable and meaningful education system is both an imperative and a responsibility that Hábitat Learning Community has chosen to embrace. In the Reggio Emilia Approach, we have found a powerful source of inspiration to nurture generations who think, feel, and act with creativity, compassion, and a deep sense of social and environmental responsibility.
With small class sizes, personalized attention, and warm, aesthetically beautiful spaces, Hábitat feels more like a second home than a traditional school.
